Storytelling in Appalachia is a rich tradition that dates back centuries, deeply rooted in the culture and daily lives of its people. Historically, storytelling served as a means of preserving history, imparting wisdom, and providing entertainment in communities where oral tradition was often the primary mode of communication. These stories, passed down through generations, encapsulated the values, struggles, and triumphs of Appalachian life, creating a shared cultural heritage that continues to resonate today. Storytelling remains a vital part of Appalachian culture, adapting to modern forms while retaining its core significance. The inaugural Appalachian Literary and Arts Storytelling Festival, located on the public square, honors this tradition by bringing together storytellers of all ages to share their narratives. The public square, a central and historically significant location in Nelsonville, serves as a symbolic gathering place that underscores the communal nature of storytelling. It is a space where the past meets the present, fostering a sense of continuity and community. Nelsonville's history is intertwined with the broader history of southeastern Ohio, characterized by its role in the coal mining industry, its resilience through economic shifts, and its ongoing efforts toward community revitalization. By hosting the festival in Nelsonville, we pay homage to the town's significant contributions to the region's narrative and celebrate its enduring spirit.

art [BOOK]ish
Juror: Rich-Joseph Facun
Book arts hold a unique and valued place within Appalachian culture. The tradition of recording personal stories and community histories in journals, diaries, and family bibles has created a tangible connection to the past. We invite artists to delve into this rich tradition and explore how books can serve as both objects of art and intimate vessels for narrative, preserving the voices and experiences of individuals and communities.
This exhibition focuses on the art of the book. We invite submissions using an expanded vision of book arts. We seek work that extends beyond traditional forms, encompassing art books, photobooks, sketchbooks, and artworks created from or within books. These creative expressions continue the region's legacy of storytelling, adapting to contemporary forms while honoring historical practices.
Submission Requirements
We welcome submissions in a wide variety of mediums, including but not limited to: visual art, performance, installation, film, sound, and more - in addition to art books, art made from books, art made in books, photobooks, sketchbooks, and other book-related art forms.
